New Year, Same Elder Grubbs

Happy New Year!! It’s crazy that it’s already 2022. But this week was pretty long and pretty sad for our district. We’ve all grown super close and it’s been awesome but there’s a huge possibility most of us will get transferred including me. We also found out at district Council that one of the sisters got her MRI results back and she has a severely herniated disk in her spine that is pinching her sciatic nerve. So she’s gonna have to go home to get surgery so it was all just super sad.

We helped Sister Russel take down her Christmas lights and she asked if Elder Speyer was a new missionary and it was hilarious. That night we had dinner at the Barnard’s and Bro Barnard showed us the pictures of his surgery when his wife shot him lol. (She didn’t actually shoot him but happened to be holding the gun when it went off so it’s a running joke that she shot him) but the pictures were super gruesome and his calf was just like gone. You could see through this gaping hole all the way to the bone. It was crazy. They saved his leg but had to cut down his tibia and fibula. So one leg is short than the other. He has to get custom shoes that give one shoe a 3 inch lift. Pretty crazy story.

New Years was honestly pretty anticlimactic. We had a district call and talked about what we learned this year (last year I guess) and then we all went to bed. So not super excited but oh well. We had to be in the apartment by 7:00 too so that was just awesome… BUT when we got back to the apartment complex, this guy was struggling to change his tire so we went over and helped him. The bolts were on soooo tight and the wrench we had was super small so you had like no leverage. They tried standing on it and jumping and everything and it wouldn’t budge. But I said a prayer and pulled up on the wrench as hard as I could. The lugnuts were so tight that the car was coming off the ground. So basically we were deadlifting part of the car. But somehow deadlifting w all my might I was able to loosen all 5 lugnuts (which nobody else could do so I was pretty proud of myself) but then the tire wouldn’t come off and it was so stupid because it was like it was rusted on. But we kicked it a few times and it came loose. So that was cool and this other guy from the apartment was talking w us and asking us about our missions and it was pretty cool.

Saturday was the Rose bowl and some members are from Utah are huge ute fans so we watched part of the game during dinner and it was super fun. It was nice to watch football again cause it’s been so long.
Yesterday was suuuuuper cold. There were freeze warnings everywhere. You would think Texas wouldn’t get cold but it was actually crazy. The temp wasn’t too bad, it got like higher 20s but when the humidity is 80% it doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. The cold is just piercing and goes right through your clothing. It was FRIGID!!! Plus it was Sunday so we aren’t allowed to do studies or anything in restaurants and we have to be I public so we had to be outside. It was soooo cold.

But church was pretty good. I bore my testimony because I’m thinking I’ll get transferred next week so I wanted to thank the ward for all they have done for me. The Paris ward has been so awesome and they’ve helped me so much. Especially me being a new missionary and it being my first area, they’ve supported me and loved me through it all. The members are literally the coolest. I’m really hoping I don’t get transferred but there’s a big possibility so I don’t wanna get my hopes up.

A few weeks ago a guy from the stake bore his testimony and I would like to share his thoughts with you all. He talked about New Years resolutions and how few people end up completing them. He proposed the idea of making a new years covenant with the Lord. Ponder that in your hearts these next few days and think about a covenant you can make with your Heavenly Father to come closer to him.

I hope y’all had a good week! Alma 17:10 “And it came to pass that the Lord did visit them with his Spirit, and said unto them: Be comforted. And they were comforted.” You are never alone no matter what. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we made a covenant at baptism with the Lord to mourn with those that mourn. I invite you to pray for an opportunity to provide that comfort someone stands in need of. Pray to be an instrument in his hands to share the light of Christ. I love you all and wish you the best. Don’t forget to always be a disciple of Christ! Muchas Besos! And remember, God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!!!

Love, Elder Grubbs
