One with the Birds

This week was a crazy, exciting, busy week for Elder Grubbs. So many things happened but I’ll try to cram it all in in this email.

Tuesday we helped bro Castillo move a fridge from his truck to his kitchen and man was it a pain… Long story short we had to take off the kitchen door but it still wouldn’t fit so we wanted to take the handles off the fridge but we didn’t have any Allen wrenches so I had to find the right socket wrench that fit the door hinges. I took 4/5 bolts of the hinges and the last one was right behind a bigger bolt. So I couldn’t fit the wrench between to loosen it. I had to loosen it by hand unscrewing it 1/2 an inch at a time. Finally we got it off and shimmied the fridge through the doorway so we only had to take one door off. We unplugged the other fridge and disconnected everything but of course the water was still on so when Elder Kennedy took the hose off it sprayed everywhere. We figured out how to shut the water off and got the new fridge hooked up. It was a very long 2 hours…

Almost everyday during the week we did service at the food pantry and it was a lot of fun. Wednesday night the Harris’s took us to CajunTex and I tried gator and oyster for the first time. Gator just tasted like chicken but then fishy/ocean taste. Wasn’t my favorite but now I can say I’ve eaten gator. THEN that night we went running and I thought I was gonna die. Apparently when I’m sad I run faster cause idek how I ran like that. I ran it just under 11.25 which is like a 5.45 mile pace for 2 miles. As far as track and cross country that’s like not even fast. But for an out of shape Elder Grubbs in a sweatshirt in 85⁰ with 80% humidity I’m proud of myself😂

Thursday was crazy!! We went to the library to do some language study and we saw this little bird at the bottom of the stairs. Of course we couldn’t just leave her to die. So we gave her some water and tried to figure what was wrong. She couldn’t fly but seemed to be fine. So we think she was just a baby and didn’t know how to fly and fell out of the nest or something. We couldn’t reach the nests we saw so we decided we were gonna take matters into our own hands and teach her to fly. In nature when baby birds are born and grow a little bit, if they don’t jump out of the nest, the mother pushes them out so that they can learn to fly. So I decided that I would throw her into the air simulating falling out of the nest and she would try to fly. I did that about 15 times or so trying to help her fly. She didn’t quite get it but definitely made a lot of progress! Eventually we decided that the best place for her would probably be in a tree. So we went over next to a tree and tossed her up and she flew over to a branch. I don’t know where she is now but I’d like to think she learned to fly or somehow returned to her nest. We probably spent at least an hour trying to help her. Then when we were putting her in the tree this mom and 3 kids walked over and started talking to us. She told us she had been watching us and was surprised that we had “lasted so long”. Then her son said we looked fancy and asked where we work haha. So I told him we were missionaries and taught people about Jesus Christ and then they left. But hey that’s a seed planted 🤷‍♂️

On Thursday we texted Cristian and asked if he had read anything from the BOM yet and he replied with “Yes but it was too powerful for me. I’ll try to read as much as i can” it was so cool.

Friday we had interviews and it was so good. One of the things president talked to me about was “let yourself be happy”. And for a lot of people that doesn’t sound like anything profound, but for me it was. I get trapped in my head a lot and sometimes I feel like I don’t deserve to be happy. I just need to not be so hard on myself.

Then we got permission from President to go to B-Dubs!! I tried the hottest wing (the Carolina reaper wing) and I thought I was gonna die and I only had one. But it was super fun and the wings were so good.

We went on exchanges and it was me and Elder Mecham here in Marshall. He’s an English missionary so I had to do like all the talking on calls and street contacts but it was actually super good. I doubt myself a lot but when I was basically forced to do the talking it was good for me and I was surprised at how much I could say and understand. A huge blessing for sure.

Then that night Elder Mecham and I went street contacting and he wanted to knock this door but when we walked towards it this giant Pitbull ran onto the porch. Elder Mecham was like “Dang not anymore” and I was like “oh no no Elder. If the spirit directs, the spirit directs.” So I walked up to the porch and the dog just kind of walked away. But it turned out to be a spanish contact! So we got a return appointment it was so cool! And maria (the one that answered the door) was holding her daughter and she was adorable!! I asked her how old and she said she was 2 months old. She had these great big brown eyes and and she was so cute

Saturday we had a lesson with Cristian!! It was so cool!! He said he couldn’t come but called us back asking if we were still at the church. We said yes and he said he just had to grab his BOM and he’d be over in 20 min. So we stayed and then had the coolest lesson with him. Hermano Sullivan basically taught the whole lesson but we just reviewed the restoration and answered his questions. We talked about the prophet and then answered questions about Noah and the flood and the Wisemen and it was all over the place but so good. Hermano made it super casual and talked about marriage and proper authority and it was so cool. You could see the wheels just turning in his head. We talked about how only God can tell him if the BOM was true and he’s like I already know it’s true. He talked to us about how he wanted to change and the spirit was so strong. Then top everything off we talked about prayer and told him how to pray and he said the closing prayer. It was the most heartfelt and genuine prayer I’ve ever heard. He was just so sincere talking to Heavenly father and the room was just engulfed with the spirit.

Sunday, Happy Father’s Day!! Church was so good and Cristian came! The member who spoke literally talked about Noah and the flood and the Wisemen and it was exactly what we talked about yesterday. He taps me on the shoulder and goes, “we talked about that yesterday!” It was amazing!! Then he stayed for our gospel principles class in Spanish and he was comfortable, reading with everyone, and asking questions. It was such a good day!! Cristian is the coolest and Hermano is trying to help him propose to his girlfriend it’s pretty funny. He has a 2 month old daughter and I wanna meet her so bad!!

But it’s been a good week for Elder Grubbs. There’s definitely things I’ve left out such as us street contacting everyday and not a single person respond to us. We ask if we can share a message or give them our card and they just stare at us. They don’t say anything. Just look at us like we’re idiots. But it was still a great week. I hope y’all are doing well and I hope you have an amazing week! I love you all and please let me know if there is anybody I can pray for! Muchos Besos! And remember, God is good all the time, and all the time, God is good!!

Love

Elder Grubbs
